Possibilities with Ex vivo Heart Perfusion in the podcast MyHeart.net

Prof. David McGiffin, Head of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Alfred Health discuss the possibilities with Ex vivo Heart Perfusion in the podcast MyHeart.net

Learn more about the difference between Donor Brain Dead and Donor Circulatory Death for heart and lung, the current available technique on some markets and what the future may bring through the Non-ischemic Heart Preservation (Hypothermic perfusion) with the use of XVIVO Heart Box and Heart Solution.

Prof. McGiffin is talking about both pre-clinical and clinical trials on the technique and solution that Prof. Stig Steen has invented and that XVIVO Perfusion is now commercializing – the XVIVO Heart Box and XVIVO Heart Solution.

As Prof. McGiffin points out, one of the major issues in todays available technique and solutions is the limitation of time for the heart to be outside of the body, a good heart can last up to 4h before it has to be implanted into the recipient. Within that period of time, a matching recipient has to be found and prepared for transplantation – and that in just within the radius of 4h transportation from the donor body.

With this new technique, the XVIVO Heart Box and XVIVO Heart Solution, Prof. McGiffin suggest that, the heart could potentially be outside of the body for up to 10 hours. Preclinical research have confirmed successful transplantation after 24 hours (!) of ex-vivo perfusion with the XVIVO Perfusion technique. (Steen et al. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4898163/). The first clinical experience with the technology has been published (Nilsson et al https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32532991/).

Prof. McGiffin also points out the interesting findings in their pre-clinical work comparing the standard cold static storage vs the non-ischemic heart perfusion.
