Claudia Struzzi wins Prix de Chimie Appliquée for best thesis

Over the last decades, the astonishing properties of carbon nanomaterials have attracted scientific interest and efforts to improve their potential has been made. The unique electrical, optical and mechanical properties have encouraged the continuous research breakthroughs, hence accelerating the commercialisation process. To meet the specific requirements demanded by an application or expand their use to different areas such as optoelectronics and photonics, the carbon nanomaterials are often modified using different functionalisation strategies, where plasma technologies enable a fast and reliable process for the chemical functionalisation of carbon nanomaterials widening the potential of innovative two-dimensional structures.

With her PhD thesis, Claudia Struzzi has done a multi-disciplinary investigation allowing a broad and deep understanding of the fluorination mechanism, of the controlled covalent modification of carbon nanotubes and graphene chemistries as well as of the gas sensing performance of these materials. In the fundamental study, advanced spectroscopy, microscopy and spectromicroscopy were used which culminated in her acquiring knowledge in the practical realisation and operation of gas sensing devices.

In March 2019 her thesis Spectromicroscopy investigation of plasma fluorinated carbon nanomaterials for gas sensing application won Prix de Chimie Appliquée, the bi-annual thesis award given by the Belgian organisation FRS-FNRS.
